UP Magazine - The Porky

has been around for 38 years!

Help us make it another 38!

We absolutely LOVE what we do and can't imagine it going by the wayside.  Over the years, we've had a lot of life happen and a lot of it not so good.  We made it through the recession of 2008, Covid in 2020 and now we are feeling it again.  Life is changing; how we spend is changing.  Costs are going up and life isn't easy.  In fact, it can be downright cruel.  But we want to keep doing what it is we do.  We want to share stories and humor and everything good so that there is always a little sunshine in the lives of others.  We want to keep our magazine the best quality print that we can and we want to keep the $5 price at $5.  Everything else is going up, but we are NOT going to cave.  Our readers are our family and family has to stick together.

At one time, The Porcupine Press had offices and staff and we put the paper out weekly.  It was a passion and it was the livelihood of many people.  Today, we are down to a staff of two and several writers who donate their stories to our humble project.  It's not always easy to keep things going and we do what we can because it is STILL our passion.  Somehow we always seem to manage.  But there comes a time when we just need a little extra help...like everyone.  And, let me tell you, it sucks having to admit it, but we really could use it right now.

Anyhow, we are evolving and could use a little help if you can give it.  Ordering a magazine, downloading a digital copy, or just donating to our cause is a blessing for us.  We want to be here for our readers, our writers and our advertisers for years to come.   We want to keep sharing up north living, our humor, our history...everything!  So, if you can donate to support us, we truly would appreciate it.   Especially now as the weather has damaged our home to a greater extent than we had imagined.

Vicki Logan, one of our writers and a musician/artist from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, has graciously offered some of her music in MP3 form and a 16x20 photo of the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, an up north attraction, for your donations as a THANK YOU!  So, when you donate, you will receive an e-mail with a link to the file for you to download.   ENJOY and THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Mike and Robin's home in the UP has been hit hard by the weather.  During the last snow storm, the pipes froze and now the house has been hit by flooding.  They returned from their trip and found that the damage was way worse than expected.  Their sons are helping to clean up the home, but it will not be livable for quite some time.  They did not have insurance.

The water pipes need to be replaced and the boiler needs work in order for the heat to be turned on.  They do have electric, but electric heating in 29 degree weather isn't going to be enough.  Mike is staying in the house because he's a stubborn old fart, Robin says.  He shouldn't be there with his health conditions, but they are both wanting to be there to repair as much as they can to save as much cash as possible because it just isn't there.  The floor boards are all warped and, more than likely, black mold will appear.

If you are interested in donating to help them get back on their feet or know of someone who can help them, you can call Robin at (906) 361-0269.  Anything would be appreciated!

For anyone who may be able to lend a hand or has extra building materials to offer, Mike and Robin live in Chatham, Michigan.  Again, give them a call to help.

THANK YOU!!
